One of the major inequalities that Latino students may experience is the additional resources that meet the needs for them to improve their language learning. According to OECD " Many schools with second language learners aren't provided with programs that can assist to help to guide these students to read or write in English" (OECD, 2008). Causing many students to find themselves in situations where there's not a lot of resources to provide the additional help that can respond to their needs. According to the U.S Department of Education “ In urban schools most teachers aren’t qualified and don't have a second language to teach standard English to Hispanic children” (U.S Department of Education). This may result these children to face difficulties when it comes to not being provided with resources that meet the needs for their reading, writing, and language skills.
Connection
This paragraph from my research paper specifically connected to my project because during the time I was tutoring these elementary students at the library it was around when Hurricane Maria impacted Puerto Rico. Many of these children migrated here in Hartford, Connecticut not knowing any English. Which made it difficult for these children entering a school where English is the first language. These children were expected to learn how to read and write English in the middle of the school year and catch up in their curriculum. They weren’t provided with the right resources due to their teachers not speaking a second language and their schools having few programs that provided additional help. This led to many students experiencing inequity education due to them not being provided with resources that respond to their needs. That’s when I made a change by coming in the library and helping these children with their homework, reading, writing, and language skills. And coordinating educational programs and literacy activities that can improve their reading and writing.
