Literacy Activities
My first program was making book marks with the kids they really enjoyed this program. They were able to make their book marks out of origami paper and decorate it with googly eyes and construction paper.
Students were able to decorate a popsicle stick and use it as a reading pointer. I thought this will be a fun way for my students to use while they read.
I coordinated a Bingo Night for the kids. I made the bingo sheets with sight words in it so students can practice more on their sight words. I thought it will be a fun way for students to learn their sight words and practice them as well.
Students were able to make their own picture books out of construction paper. After they made their books they were able to share their story that they created.
English LearnersI made a matching game for my English learners were they practice their sight words by matching popsicle sticks together. The second picture are flash cards that I made for one of my students. Each side had sight words that were English and translated in Spanish. The third picture is one student reading to me, all my students read everyday after they do their homework.
This is my homework club where I assist my students with homework help and reading. At times I would have to translate what they read in Spanish or say certain words that they could't pronounce well.
Book themed craftsOn Valentines day I read to my students "Happy Valentines day, mouse!". After reading the book to them we made chocolate kisses mice and decorated it with googly eyes and heart shaped ears. The kids really enjoyed this program because it was book related and they love sweets.
In celebration of Dr. Seuss birthday I read to my students "Yertle the Turtle" by Dr. Seuss. After reading the book my kids made turtle out of egg cartons, cotton balls, and googly eyes. After making turtles they were able to do a challenge were they stacked up their turtles to see how many can go on top of each other. They were very creative with their turtles and had a great time.
During the first week of spring I read to my students " The very hungry caterpillar." After reading the book students were able to make caterpillars made out of paper plates, construction paper, and googly eyes.
I read to my students " La manquita grunona " which means " The grouchy lady bug" in Spanish. After reading this book my kids were able to make 3D lady bugs out of construction paper and googly eyes. I thought it will be cool way to read a novel that is in Spanish for my English Learners to connect and understand more.

My students were able to use their imagination by doing a puppet show with their finger puppets. These finger puppets were made out of construction paper and googly eyes. They were very creative with this craft and it was the cutest thing ever to see them use their imagination.

The second picture is a story cube were students were able to make a cube out of paper and draw pictures that told a story. One of my A ha moments that I had in the library was teaching the elementary students how to do the chicken dance with my mentors. A Caribbean drummer that visited the library that day told us to dance for the kids. Seeing myself and my mentors dancing together was the funniest thing ever.
During my last week in the library I was given a note card by one of my students. I knew this student for a year and I have witnessed his growth during my stay at the library. I have learned that this student has behavioral issues that many of the librarians didn't understand. I always had patience with him and always knew how to manage his behavior. I built a close relationship with him and he always told me how much he appreciates my help and most importantly understanding him.
The picture to the left is a note and a starburst that was given to me from a first grader after helping her with homework. Her grandmother takes her every day to the library and always thanks me for helping her granddaughter since she doesn't know how to speak English. The picture to left is a bag that was given to me from a second grader. After doing the bag program she gave me a bag that said " Miss Jenika" with her name and a flower on the back too. In the bag she gave me a note that said " Dear, Miss Jenika thank you for helping you can be anything you are smart, nice, and kind."
The images above are emails between me and my mentor Christina Hill. The image to the right is me letting Christina know I was coming to the library the next day. I also, wanted to discuss my ideas with my other mentor Rubina. Both of my mentors both agreed for me to start coming to library after my soccer season. The image to the right is Christina response to my email. Both of my mentors were excited to see me again.
This is a recommendation from one of my mentors Christina Hill who is a manger at Dwight Branch Library. She wrote me a recommendation for a scholarship and explained my work at the library.
