The person I decided to job shadow is Amanda Olmstead she is a workforce development programs manager for Child protective services for Maryland Department of Human Services. I learned many things from Amanda when it came to her everyday tasks as a social worker and her journey becoming a manager for Department of Human Services. Since I wanted to major in Psychology and Amanda majored in social work she gave me her perspectives and gave me a different view between these two degrees. She told me the similarity between Psychology and social work is that your changing someone's life for the better and making a change. Hearing that from her has really made me inspired to pursue my career in the field of Psychology.
Out of all the questions I asked from Amanda what really stood out to me was the passion she had for her job. Hearing her describe her work and how much she enjoys it has persuaded me to pursue in a career that I will enjoy going to everyday. She told me what she loves about her job is the flexibility and how there is certain days she doesn't know what she's going to run into when it comes to cases, investigations, and counseling. I have learned from Amanda's position that communication is a essential skill for her job when it comes to talking to relatives, parents, detectives, and investigators to lay out plans or recommendations. As a manager for Department of Human services Amanda told me at times she gets overwhelmed and stressed due to the workload she receives. She informed me that being a psychologist I will be in those position too however, it's going to make me better at what I'm going to do.
