About Me
My name is Jenika Carrillo, I am a senior at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy I have been attending here since sixth grade. I was born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut. I am the oldest of three sisters and throughout my entire life, I have always tried to be a role model for my younger sisters. I consider myself as a creative and a hard working individual. Having younger siblings has helped me have a connection with younger children. Interacting with children has been something that I always been good at which has been beneficial throughout my project.
I have many younger siblings who are English learners which has made me interested in helping other children to get the additional help that my siblings didn’t have. When Hurricane Maria impacted Puerto Rico many of my younger cousins came down here in Hartford, Connecticut not knowing any English. Which relates to my project because many of the children at the library has been in the same position where they experience not having the right resources to provide for their needs. Learning equity and inequity education, in my summer internship for Teach for America last year, has really persuaded me that every child deserves to receive the same guidance and education as everyone else. I'm a strong believer of equity education and I'm willing to make a change to the life of others who go through challenges academically and experience inequity education.
