Today after soccer practice I went to Dwight Branch Library to talk to my mentor Christina Hill. Me and Christina caught up on things since I haven't seen her since June. I told her I’m willing to continue helping out in the library for my capstone project. We discussed the days I will be attending to the library and we both agreed on I will be coming to the library after soccer season. We also talked about the plans that I will be setting out with my other mentor Rubina. Rubina will help me with creative activities with the kids and Christina will help me with management skills.
September 4, 2018
Today I finished my capstone proposal it was pretty easy due to me already having an idea over the summer. I was having difficulties with the research question but I think I’m at a great start. Hopefully when I do start my research paper it won’t be as difficult for me to answer and the information that I need.
September 5, 2018
Today Mrs. Boutilier came to my capstone class discussing about mentors. I was kind of thinking about mentoring middle schoolers in school because it will be easier to get to since it’s in school but I think I’m going to stick with tutoring elementary students in the library.
September 7, 2018
I’m currently thinking about Capstone and I’m actually happy that I have a idea before I came to school. I know many people who are unsure what they are going to do so I'm glad I’m on track. However, I’m afraid that soccer can get in the way since I’m planning to do my field work after soccer season. Hopefully things will turn out great and my schedule will turn out fine.
September 8, 2018
Senior year is so far getting to me and I’m soooooo stressed out. So many due dates and so many things I have to do in school such as making a logo for the writing center “ Tiger Center “ and I also have to brainstorming ideas for senior shirts. So much pressure, but I think I will do fine. Hopefully my other assignments through the year won’t affect my capstone but I think I will be able to balance out my school work and capstone well.
September 14, 2018
I really need to start journaling more my main concern about starting capstone late fall is not keeping up with journaling since I’m not doing field work yet. I really hope soccer season doesn’t affect my capstone I really don’t want to be behind. I need to start thinking positive and stop thinking negative I know I got this.
September 15, 2018
Today in class Mrs. Zamorski helped me with my research question it’s so much better than what I originally had. Hopefully during my research I will find some good information and interesting facts. I believe our research essay is going to be due soon and out of capstone that’s the only thing I'm afraid of. I really hope I ace it I mean if I can do Mrs. Weimers research paper I definitely got this!
September 20, 2018
Today in class Mrs. Zamorski helped me review my proposal. She discussed the errors that I made and told me I was being too descriptive and I need to shorten it. Which is not big news to me because I'm always going into detail when it comes to summarizing things and writing my essays. I was kind of upset of the grade I received because I was missing like three things but hopefully I will have them by Monday.
September 21, 2018
Today my mentor Chrisinia Hill finally emailed me back the missing information I needed for my proposal. Now all I have to do is fix those errors and add the things that I needed. Hopefully when I get back on Monday Mrs. Zamorski will approve it so I can send it to Mrs. Bout.
September 26,2018
Today I finally made a couple of changes to my proposal. I’m officially done! I will be giving it to Mrs. Boutilier this afternoon, I already signed it and it’s ready to go. It feels so great to be a week earlier and have it over with. All I have to do is find my five sources for my research paper, so far I have two I’m trying to find really good sources with good information.
October 1, 2018
Hello October! One of the stressful months ever in senior year. Today I had anxiety due to everything that’s going on in school such as capstone, soccer, school work , senior shirts , and most importantly college process. I’ve been trying to do everything at once in a day but it’s honestly just overwhelming me. I really hope this month goes well and all my hard work really does pay off for next year. I’m really trying to stay positive and not over think to much.
October 4, 2018
Today I found out on Wednesday we don’t have school due to the PSATS. Which is perfect because I really need the day off to work on capstone and start signing up for scholarships. I’m thinking about visiting the library on Wednesday to talk to my supervisor about our ideas when I start going to the library next month. I think I should start thinking and writing my ideas that I want to do with the kids in the library.
October 8, 2018
Today my capstone teacher Mrs. Zamorski told us our research paper outline is due on Friday… I’m still in the process of annotating my sources and I still don’t know the topics that I’m going to address in my essay. Hopefully tonight I will be done annotating and start analyzing my notes so I can begin to start my sentences. So far reading my sources there’s a lot of good information.
October 9, 2018
Today I emailed my mentor Christina to let her know that I will be coming to the library tomorrow afternoon. I plan to discuss my ideas to her and rubina and let them know that I will be coming soon to the library.
October 10 ,2018
This morning I worked on my research paper outline and so far it looks great I just need three paragraphs and I will be all set. After working on my outline I went to the library and it went great I saw many familiar faces and they were excited to me and a lot of new kids also. Me and Rubina discussed my ideas and she agreed to help my ideas to happen. She told me that many students have been doing very well doing their homework and have been reading a lot. I was very surprised when I saw the reading log. After our discussion I introduced myself to a couple of kids I can’t lie I was very nervous because they were in middle school which is something I’m not use to seeing in the library. But when the elementary students came in I felt more comfortable I helped a boy his math homework and a girl with her reading. One of the girls that I was working with doesn’t know a lot of English so she reads bilingual books and Rubina helps her read. I was thinking I can work with Emilie a lot more since my focus on my capstone is to help foreign students. I plan to come back tomorrow after soccer to tell Rubina more of my ideas but as of right now I’m not sure if I can make it because I have practice and I have to watch my sisters. Hopefully everything is planned out well!
October 11, 2018
Today I wasn’t able to go to the library due to me having a late soccer practice. I emailed Rubina and Christina to let them know that I wasn’t going to be able to go to the library this afternoon. I also didn’t get the chance to write down my ideas for the activities that I want to do with the students in the library. But I plan to meet with Rubina Tuesday afternoon to discuss my ideas.
October 14, 2018
This afternoon I searched up ideas that I want to do in the library with the elementary students. I was mainly looking for popular books for children for my book club. I came to a realization that I don’t only want to do a book discussion I also want to literacy activities that relates to the book. So far I founded three books that are popular and have a movie which is BFG, The Jungle Book, and Wonder. I really want to do Wonder I think it will be great to discuss with the students and we can do many projects on it. Besides that I also looked at Halloween activities that I would like to do with the kids and also starting to make my activities soon as possible. I really hope Rubina likes my ideas when I see her Tuesday afternoon.
October 15, 2018
Today after soccer practice I went to see Rubina at the library. I told her about my ideas and she really liked them. However, she told me the activities that I want to do I have to make sure there’s time to do them. Leading one of my targets being to make sure there’s going to be enough time when I want to do my lesson plans and activities. This can be difficult because students come to the library at 3:30 p.m and the library closes at 5:00 p.m. And when students get there they have to settle down, eat their snack, and complete their homework which can take a hour. Leaving me to have a hour of doing my activities with them. So that’s something that I need to figure out how I’m going to make my activities short. Other than that Rubina really like my book club idea and wants me to the book “ Wonder “ , her only concern is the timing. I’m planning to do my book club beginning of November twice a week. I’m also planning to do a “ Halloween week “ where I will do activities that are Halloween themed. I also plan on doing other programs with Rubina that she has planned. Overall, I’m very excited to work at the library again and interacting with these kids and giving back to my community!
October 16, 2018
I’m officially done with the first marking period for capstone! I’m ahead of the game right now. I’m done with my four pages of my research paper and my field log. It feels so great that I have this research paper out the way because I thought I will struggle through this step in capstone. All I have to do is make a few changes on my research paper for my final draft on November!
October 21, 2018
This afternoon I searched up fun educational Halloween activities on Pinterest, I found many but I had difficulties finding more educational activities. Thankfully I was able to find a way to make the activity educational. I was thinking about doing slime since a lot of kids love slime but I didn’t know how to make it educational, but I researched more about slime and it can actually can be a science project so that will be fun. To make the slime a more Halloween theme I plan to add fake eyeballs or spiders and many more Halloween decorations. I just need to make sure that Rubina will be okay with it and if it’s age appropriate.
October 22, 2018
Today after soccer practice I went to the library and helped a couple of elementary students with their homework. I spent most of my time on one student that I tutored last year. He didn’t remember me at first but once I started talking about me helping last year he began to remember. I helped him with his math homework and I tried to keep him focus since he tends to get distracted with his surroundings. At first he was willing to work with me to do his homework but he slowly became bored and started giving up. He took his phone out and opened a calculator, I told him that he didn’t need it because I’m here to help. He understood at first until he opened a game on his phone and got easily distracted. I repeatedly told him to put his phone away and we both made a promise if he finishes one page he will be able to play his game. He eventually finished his homework and thanked me for helping him. By that time he was done with his homework I went to help Rubina with recording reading logs and organized the homework. Me and Rubina discussed my halloween activities and we will continue discussing about them on Wednesday. I can’t wait!
October 24, 2018
Today I didn’t have soccer practice which was perfect because I was able to go to the library. When I got there Rubina was setting the tables up for a program she informed me, that a woman was coming to visit the library to make butterfly puppets. For two hours we made butterfly puppets that were made out card stock and a tree branch to balance the butterfly. It was pretty fun due to me enjoying doing arts & crafts. Even though the program was fun with the kids it did take a lot of time that affect their homework time. There was a fire drill that lasted for 20 minutes that wasted most of the time and since all of us was pretty occupied with the activity we didn’t keep track of time. I also wasn’t able to discuss my ideas to Rubina since me and her were busy with helping out with the kids. Hopefully on Friday I will able to I really want to do a lesson plan for the kids. Fingers crossed!
October 30, 2018
I wasn’t able to go to the library Friday nor Monday due to my soccer games. Thursday afternoon I was able to notify Christiana and Rubina about me not coming and they were perfectly fine with it. Today I was able to come in I mostly spend my time working with a third grader. I helped him with his math, I noticed he gets distracted easily and finds a excuse to be off task. It was difficult for me at first to keep him seated and focus on his homework but I convinced him if he does his homework he can play with LEGO’s and I will read to him. He agree to that deal but he was still being off task after a while. After José was done with his homework and reading me and rubina had a book discussion about James Patterson books which are comedy books. Me and Rubina discussed the main character and we also talked about bullying since the character deals with it. Students were able to talk about their experiences and we also cracked a couple of jokes that were in the book. After the book discussion most students left leaving me helping Rubina to clean up. I wasn’t able to talk to Rubina a lot today because again it was to busy and time goes by very quickly. I asked her if we were doing anything tomorrow which is Halloween and I want to do some crafts. She said we will most likely will if we have time, we mostly do another book discussion. I really hope we do crafts because I love Halloween and I know the students will enjoy a Halloween activity.
October 31, 2018
Today I tried to work on my research paper in class and so far I think I have the right idea but for some reason I have no motivation to do it… My laptop broke last week and lately I have been taking the advantage in class to use a chromebook because it can get quite annoying typing my essay on my phone. Reading my essay it’s so far good I just need to add a couple of things and a couple of statistics. Hopefully things go well for my essay. This afternoon I also went to the library we didn’t do any halloween activities but and Rubina handed out candy and a lot of kids enjoyed that. I helped two kids with their homework and me and Rubina were able to discuss about a activity that I want to do with the kids tomorrow. I’m planning to do bookmarks with them but they aren’t ordinary book marks they are more creative. I spent most of my day making cutting eyeballs and making examples for students to look at.
November 1, 2018
Today after school I went to the library. I showed my bookmark examples to Christina and Rubina and they loved it. Rubina informed me that I won’t be able to do my program because they was a program that was going on that she wasn’t aware of today. I was kind of bummed out that I couldn’t do my program because I spent my whole day making bookmarks and cutting out shapes. But Rubina told me that I have to get use to these kind of situations because she goes through them all the time, as long as I’m prepared and have my program set I will be ready to go. I also couldn’t do the program because I wanted to take pictures and Christina told me that I need a letter from Mrs. Zamorski informing Christina what the pictures are for and make sure the pictures aren’t released to the public. Therefore I spent most of the day with helping a couple of students with homework and participating the program that they were doing. I also did coloring with two middle school girls I got to get to know them a little more. After that Rubina informed me that she will only be at the library Tuesday and Thursday next week which leaves me by myself with the kids that week with Christina’s help. And I’m kind of nervous for that because now I will in control making sure kids do their homework and dealing with their behavior. However, Rubina told me that I will be able to do programs those days so now I have to plan more programs for next week. After that the kids left and I stood at the library to do my research paper since my laptop is broken. I did some changes and it sounds good. However, when I got home I didn’t continue working on it because I ended up falling asleep while I was doing it. When I woke up it was 12 am and I began to break down. I have been so overwhelmed with everything that has been going on when it comes to the research paper , scholarships , SATS and college applications. I really hope all this stress will be worth it.
November 2, 2018
Today in class I had a mental break down. Everything was hitting all at once and I started to break down. I was thinking about my research paper, college applications, scholarships all at one Mrs. Zamorski saw head down and knew something was wrong but I didn’t bother to put my head up because I didn't want her to see the tears running down my face. So I just stood silent which was wrong thing for me to do because I feel like I was being rude but it wasn’t my intentions to come out that way. Mrs. Boutilier was also at the classroom and she saw my head down and cane over to me and I didn’t respond because I didn’t want the whole class to see me cry. She suggested that I should see her later in the day and I did. I told her I was overwhelmed and everything is hitting me at once and she understood. We had a talk about how to manage my stress and some techniques that I should use when I’m stuck on a essay. She also typed me a letter for the library to confirm that I can take pictures at the library when I’m doing my lesson plans.
November 5, 2018
It’s currently 12 in the morning and I’m staring at my computer screen ready to just close my eyes. I honestly hate the fact when I do essay and every paragraph has to be perfect which leaves me taking hours for one paragraph. I have all the statistics and all the data that I need for the research paper but I honestly wish I had more time to make this information to make sense. This research paper is not one of my great works out of all my essays but I can honestly give myself the credit finding information that can backup my statements. I eventually did submit my essay during class and I felt like it wasn’t just right for me to submit it. So did the rest of my the day I’ve thought about my research paper and how it could’ve been better. Later today after school I went to the library I was excited to show Christina my letter from Mrs. Boutilier so I can do my book program. But unfortunately she didn’t accepted because she said Mrs. bout needs to be detailed and descriptive. I honestly don’t know why she’s giving me a hard time when I gave something that she asked for and Mrs. bout clearly stated it’s for my capstone project. I just let it be and moved on and went to see the kids and recorded their homework and reading logs. Some kids were giving me difficulties to read because Rubina wasn’t there and they said they “ didn’t need to do it”. I was able to convince a few kids to read and I also read to two students that spoke Spanish. Overall, it was quit intimidating for me to be by myself with the children without Rubina but I was able to manage their behavior and making them to do their homework and read.
November 7, 2018
Today this morning I spoke to Mrs. Boutilier about my media release and what my mentor wants her to have. Me and Mrs. Bouiltiller agreed that she was clear in her letter and she doesn’t know what the issue is. Mrs. Bout was able to call my mentor and my mentor finally agreed that I can take pictures. Today in the library there was a few students at first due to it being a half day however, it was perfect to do my bookmark program. Before I did my bookmark program I helped a few kids with their homework and made sure they read. Overall, the kids really enjoyed doing my program they made many bookmarks and they were very creative with it. I was able to take good pictures that I can use for my artifacts. I was very proud of myself and I was happy I was able to do my bookmark program since I’ve been waiting for a week. However, even though I was happy with my bookmark program later in the day I saw my grade in capstone. I have a D in capstone… Unfortunately, I have a D in my research paper and I never had a low grade in any of my research paper so that what really made me sad and frustrated. But hopefully today in class Mrs. Zamorski will discuss my errors to me and what I need to work on.
November 13, 2018
This whole weekend I’ve been trying to revise my research paper. I’ve been trying to fix the errors that me and Mrs. Zamorski discussed but I seem to have no motivation to do it. There’s so many things that I have to fix and as a perfectionist when it comes to essay I literally stay one paragraph until it sounds right. Reviewing my research paper I came into a conclusion that I should change my research question. Before my research question focused on minority students but now I think I’m going to change it to Latino students since I have a lot of statics on Latinos. Beside my research paper I’ve been going to the library and helping students with their homework and reading to them. I also have been applying to scholarships and meeting up with Mrs. Dionne with my college applications. I should be submitting my application on Friday and I’m so excited. So far things have been going well I’m just really concern about research paper. I really want my grade to go back up to a A in capstone
November 16, 2018
This morning I submitted all my college applications. I feel so relieved! After meeting up with Mrs. Dionne I went downstairs for our senior year meeting. As soon as I got there I had to present my capstone project and tell everybody in my senior class including my teachers what I do. I wasn’t nervous surprisingly I think because I’m confident what I have been doing for the past weeks. Seeing everyone smiling and seeing my pictures on the smart board while I was presenting really made me feel good. I even got a complicants from my teachers and appreciation what I have been doing. This whole day was good for me and I can’t wait for may to present my capstone this spring to see my improvement. After school I also went to the library, there wasn’t a lot of kids there but it allowed me to plan thanksgiving crafts for next week. Rubina also told me that her vacation begins next week which means that I’ll be by myself with the kids. It’s a short week so I think I will be fine.
November 19, 2018
After school I went to the library I helped with some kids with their homework I also did my scarecrow program. A lot of kids had attitudes and didn’t want to participate in my program. I notice when Rubina is not in the library a lot of kids tend to give me a attitude and don’t want to do what they are suppose to be doing like homework and reading. I still manage to change their behavior and try to convince them to do their homework and reading at times it work. Even though many kids didn’t want to participate in my program I was able to get some kids to and they enjoyed it. I love making crafts with them and it gets me happy knowing they enjoy it as well. Tomorrow I should be doing a gratitude tree for thanksgiving it’s a good craft were children will be able to say they are thankful for.
November 20, 2018
After school I went to the library I was sort of in a rush setting things up due to my school bus going to my bus stop late. I had to set up the kids snacks and my gratitude tree set up.Many kids didn’t have homework because it’s a short week so I was able to do my gratitude tree early. Only one kid wanted to participated rest of the kids were on the computers I tried to convince them and they didn’t want to come. The staff saw how they didn’t want to participate and they were able to help me convince them. I ended up having eight kids participate in the program and they really enjoyed it. They were so creative with their tree and I was able to take some nice pictures.
November 27, 2018
Today I finally finished my research paper! Even though I was stressing about it for almost a month it was all worth it. Mrs. Zamorski graded my paper and I got A! I was surprised that I received a A because personally I feel like I did okay. After school I went to the library I was excited to see my mentors Rubina and Christina since I didn’t see them last week. Today I helped kids with their homework. Some kids were giving a hard time to take out their homework but I was able to convince them. I also helped Rubina with her S.T.E.M program. While helping Rubina I saw how she can get overwhelmed but thankfully I’m there to give her a helping hand.
November 28, 2018
Today after school I went to the library I informed Rubina that I will be coming to the library three times a week which is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. She was perfectly fine with it and she understood. During my time in the library I helped students with their homework. I was in a situation with one particular student he didn’t want to do his homework he wanted to cheat by copying his classmate. I was able to make sure that didn’t happen and I was able to help .We also did a S.T.E.M project called makey makey it was pretty cool the kids enjoyed it. After the library when I got home I found out some good news I got accepted to Eastern Connecticut State University! I am so excited because it’s one of my top choices. This month so far has been treating me well so far, I have realized that I’m less stressed because I’m ahead and I have been handing things on time in all my classes.
November 30, 2018
Today after school I went to the library and set up the kids snacks and sharpened a few pencils for them. Rubina did the same program as yesterday since most kids didn’t get to do it. I was also able to do another program with them where we built different shapes with straws. It was pretty fun since I was able to give them challenges in what to make. After the program I cleaned up and one girl was willing to help me. She was very sweet and volunteered herself that she will help me because “she's a good helper”. I really appreciated her help and it warms my heart everytime kids notice what I do and help me out. Before I left I was able to talk to Rubina I asked if she was going to be at the library the whole week next week and she said she is. Rubina also informed me that usually on Tuesdays and Thursday she does her programs which I will miss due to me not going to the library those days anymore so I hope it doesn’t affect anything. However, it will give me a chance to do my program on other days so it doesn’t interfere with hers.
December 3, 2018
This morning I talked to Mrs. Boutilier and she told me that a student in my grade needed help with their research paper at the writing center. Of coarse I was willing to do it because I enjoy helping others so I did help that student. After school I went to the library a lot of kids didn’t have homework so they read. Most kids read to me and it was the cutest thing ever. One girl read two books to me she said she loves to read to me because she feels confident and she’s only in first grade! After helping her with homework I saw some kids were bored so I decided to do a quick arts and crafts with them before I left. We made drawings of gingerbread men and they were very creative with it. Before I left I also informed Rubina that I will see her on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m since I have a half day and some kids don’t. She thought it was perfect because she plans to do a book program and she needs my help.
December 7, 2018
Today I returned to the library, I didn’t come the past days due to me having a cold. I made sure I called Christina Wednesday afternoon to inform her that I wasn’t feeling well and she fully understood and she appreciated me calling her and letting her know. I told her that I will try my very best to come in on Thursday but suggested me to stay at home and rest. This afternoon at the library Rubina informed me that her and the kids did a S.T.E.M program yesterday and the kids really enjoyed it. The whole day at the library we did the program and I was fascinated myself due to us playing with a robot that recognized coding I thought it was pretty neat. After the program I cleaned up the homework area and cleaned the tables in the library. After leaving the library afternoon I realized that I haven’t done my own programs at the library which means I plan to have my programs again.
December 10, 2018
Today at the library I helped Rubina prepare a christmas program, I helped her cut out strands of paper. When we started the program there was kids who didn’t want to participate and me and Rubina told the kids if they don’t want to participate they can read a book. Some kids were also frustrated with making the Christmas cards but with my help they got the hang of it. One kid said he appreciates my help. Which means a lot to me because it means that kids are noticing my help. After the program I cleaned up and before I left Rubina said she’s so grateful to have a helping hand and sometimes she wishes there was two of me everyday which was pretty funny.
December 12, 2018
Today at the library I helped with homework some kids read to me which is one of my favorite things they do. It always puts a smile on my face when they ask me if they can read to me. After helping with homework and recording reading logs we did a program. The program that I participated in was a balloon tower program. I had so much fun with the kids and my mentor enjoyed it herself also. I enjoy doing team programs with the kids because it allows me to interact with them and bond with them more.
December 14, 2018
After school I went to the library Rubina was excited to see me. She informed me that yesterday they did a gingerbread program and she’s going to continue today. I helped her set up the materials that were needed many kids were excited to do it. There was one boy that wanted me to do it with him and help him and I did. I enjoyed doing this program we will able to talk about Christmas and crack some jokes. After the gingerbread program I cleaned the tables and computers. Rubina thanked me again and told me she doesn’t know what she would’ve done without me. She surprised me with a Christmas present since her vacation starts next week. I felt so appreciated and special, it was so kind of her to do that for me. Since she will be out next week I get to do my own programs I plan to do two programs that have to do with self love and Friday I plan to do a Christmas program. I’m excited!
December 17, 2018
Today at the library I did a kindness program. Students were able to learn how to spread kindness and be nice to one another. They made note cards complimenting each other and designed them as well. At first the kids were interested in doing the program because they thought it will be boring. But once they got the hang of it they wanted to do more. One girl made me a note card for that said “ I like Jenika “ with a little doodle. I thought it was the cutest thing ever. After the programI I cleaned up. Some of the boys decided to free draw with me and wanted to teach me how to draw anime. It was pretty fun I was impressed by their drawings and they were impressed with my drawing skills as well. I love having small programs especially free draw because it allows me to bond more with the students. After drawing I cleaned up the library and informed Christina that I will see her on Wednesday.
December 19, 2018
Today when I went to the library Christina introduced me to a volunteer that use to work with them during the summer. He’s a freshman in high school and I was telling him how it’s great he’s starting early because it’s a great experience and it’s a good start to have a idea for capstone. He helped me make sure people had homework and if anyone needed help. I also wasn’t prepared for the program I was going to do today but thanks to him he helped me look up how to make a cube out of paper. After figuring it out we demonstrated to the kids and they really enjoyed it. They were able to to make a cube and tell a story in each side. They were very creative and enjoyed the program. After the program I was able to spend time with two boys that usually stay later. I asked them what they will like to do on Friday and they told me they wanted to do something that involves Christmas. After sharing their ideas I told them I had to go and I’ll see them on Friday. One boy said he wants me to come every day because the kids and him miss me when I don’t come on Tuesdays, Thursday’s and Fridays. I felt bad but I explained to him that I get homework also and sometimes I need to manage school work and capstone. But for him to say that mean a lot because it showed how I do get missed and the kids appreciate y help around the library.
January 4, 2019
This morning Mrs. Boutilier came into my capstone class to discuss about our website. Which was pretty much review for me since I already started my website over break. Mrs. Bout also told me she has books for my kids which is great because I have a lot of kids who enjoy reading. After school I went to the library and Rubina informed me that today will be a fun day for the kids. She has noticed that many kids don’t get homework on Friday so she thought it will be a great idea to let them play board games. Many kids were excited about this since they don’t play a lot of board games at the library. I played a memory game with a girl that has been very comfortable around me when I visit the library. The other day she gave me a bookmark where me and her colored in. She told me that she gave me the book mark because I made her like to read which was one of the cutest things ever. The book mark said “ Reading can take you to magical places” with a cute unicorn on top. This shows her that I inspire her to read. I have noticed that many students have been more comfortable around me when it comes to drawing with me, reading to me, and even telling me how their day went. I’m so glad that these students appreciate my company and help. This os what gives me motivation to come in the library and spend time with them more.
January 9, 2019
Today I had a half day which gave me time to study for my finals and catch up on scholarships. Rubina emailed me and told me that she wanted me to come in at three o'clock. I wasn’t feeling well the whole day due to my eye irritating me and it was beginning to turn into a pink eye. I still wanted to go to the library because I felt like I haven’t seen my kids in forever. When I miss days when I get sick or I can’t make it I feel so bad. I know I don’t have to go to the library every day but I truly enjoy seeing them and doing fun activities with them. When I went to the library Christina and greeted me and ask if I was okay and I told her I think I have a pink eye. And I can honestly say this was truly my aha moment . After telling Christina that she handed me some gloves and at first I thought she was joking but she was being serious. She took me to the back with Rubina and informed her I had a pinkeye. She told me I had to seat far from the table because it can be dangerous for the kids to get it. She told me I can go home if I wanted but I didn’t want to go because I honestly didn’t mind watching the kids and talking with them. After a while Rubina let me participate in the bead program and let me help. Coming to the library even through I was sick really showed that I enjoy coming to the library no matter what. The kids at the library truly brighten my day. Even though senior year is stressful I can say capstone honestly makes things better for me. I can say right now when leave the library is going to cause a huge impact on my life and one of things that are going to be hard to let go.
January 14, 2018
Today was my first finals and I’m so proud of myself right now. I’m ending another marking period with straight A’s. I’m honestly so proud of myself and the improvement I have shown. Graduation is really 5 months away and I can’t wait! Senior year is really going by fast and for these couple months I’m going to make sure I enjoy every bit of it. Today was another half day which allow me to get some rest since I had a long night of studying. I went to the library the staff was excited to see me since I missed a couple days at the library last week. After saying hi I went to my normal rountrountine ine and set up the homework table. While preparing the table a boy accidentally spilled a large container that had beads in it. It was all over the floor and I was kind of upset because there was a lot on the floor and I told the boy repeatedly to stay still. Rubina was also upset and suggest the boy to help me clean up. I was embarrassed in a way because I didn't want Rubina to think I was irresponsible or wasn’t paying attention. After cleaning up I helped with homework. The two students that have been working on English have been doing so much better with their reading and writing. One girl that I use to tutor last year has shown great improvement in her reading skills. She told me that she’s in sixth grade and her reading grade level is fourth grade. She told me she truly appreciates my help because I make her feel confident and smart. Hearing that from a student honestly warms my heart, I’m here to make a change and I’m honestly witnessing the change and growth from these students.
January 18, 2018
So far senior year has been going well for me, looking at my schedule for second semester looks like I will be fine. Only class I’m concerned about is Uconn English but i know I will be perfectly fine if I just boost my confidence. During first block I was able to touch up on my website I’m almost done I just need a couple of things. I just want to et my website out the way and complete it correctly. I’m just excited to present already and share my project to my classmates and teachers. After school I went to the library, since Friday’s it’s more a fun day for the students since majority of them don’t have homework. I did a bead program with couple of middle schoolers and two elementary students. Doing this program made me feel like I got to know more about the students and this program got us to bond more. We talked about school, they asked me questions about high school and the college that I’,going to. We talked about crazy stories that happened us and cracked a few jokes. Doing programs like this has really brought me closer to these kids.Yes I have past the limit of hours but I enjoy coming here and spending time with them. I feel like I’m attached and I know when I leave is going to be hard. After cleaning up the library after closing Rubina thank me again for my help like she usually does, she called me her right hand and angel that always helps her.
January 25, 2019
Today in class I was able to prepare for my program that I wanted to do with the kids today. I haven’t done a program in a while so I’m very excited. I’m doing a craft called reading pointers where the kids can use while they read instead of using their fingers to follow what they are reading. Mrs. Svoboda gave me a few popsicle sticks since the craft are popsicle sticks. I was able to do three examples to show the kids how to do it. When I went to the library I was kind of in a rush since Rubina was out, so I didn’t have a extra hand to help me. I had to prepare snack and my program. I was kind of nervous showing my program to the kids because I haven’t done a program in a while. But the kids absolutely loved it and I was so happy that. They were fascinated when I told them that they can use it when they read. While doing the program me and a few girls were talking and one asked me if I worked at the library and I said no I volunteer. And the little girl said “ Wow that’s very nice of you. When I come to the library I like when you do crafts with us because it’s always fun.” She’s only in fourth grade and it was so nice of her to say that. After the program was done I was able to talk to Christina and inform her I would be attending at the library on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Since I have to take classes every Wednesday for a internship this spring.
January 29, 2019
Yesterday morning during capstone Mrs. Zamorski informed my class that Mrs. Boutilier and Mr. Colon were going to call different groups down to the conference room. There were specific groups that were on track on their capstone some still need some work and I was in the group that is on track! Hearing congratulations from Mr. Colon brings joy into my ears because I’m closer to hear that congratulations again in graduation! I’m so excited so far things have been going great for my project. Today at the library it felt kind of weird going to the library since I’m so use to starting in the beginning of the week. I can’t lie going into the library feels so good, I haven’t been having the best week and coming to the library and seeing the kids brings me joy. I honestly miss my kids when I’m out and when I’m helping with homework and doing programs with them it takes my mind off of things. Today I met a five year old boy he read me three books and I was so in shock on how well he can read. I love when kids want to read to me it’s so cute and adorable. In today's program it was different me and the kids were able to have parts in askit were we all act out as a character. The kids really enjoyed it and I did also, I’ll probably do a similar program to what we did but add a little twist. Tomorrow I won’t be able to go to the library due to me going to college tour to Eastern Connecticut State University! I really hope I like it.
January 31, 2019
Yesterday I visited Eastern Connecticut State University and I absolutely loved it! I have came to decision I will be a warrior this fall and I can't wait. I was able to meet my counselor at ECSU and she gave me a outlook of schedule and it was kind of imitating but yet so exciting. Today in capstone Mrs. Zamorski reviewed my connection for my website and she liked it and my about me as well so thats a check out of my list. I’m pretty much almost done with my website which is so exciting. So far things have been going well after visiting Eastern has made me feel even more excited for next year. Today at the library we did a bag program students were able to decorate their own bag for a event that will be happening in the downtown library. The kids really enjoyed the program and they were so creative. One girl made me a bag and it was so cute she wrote “ Miss Jenika “ on it with some cute flowers on the front and her name on the back. In the bag was a note for me she told me she appreciates my help and she wrone “ I am smart, nice and kind”. Which was the cutest thing ever! After the program I cleaned up and helped a kindergartener with his homework I learned that his mom doesn’t speak any English and helping kids who parents don’t speak fluent English really means alot to me because I can help these students. After helping him with homework Rubina asked me if I will be coming tomorrow because she will be off and unfortunately I can't due to my internship meetings are rescheduled to Fridays. Which saddens me since I love coming in every friday because it's always fun and it allows me to do my own programs since Rubina is out but I’ll find a way to do my programs some how.
February 13, 2019
Today in lunch Mrs. Boutilier came up to me and told me that she loves my website so far and she’s so proud of me. It felt good to hear that from her. I'm so happy that not only my capstone teacher is noticing my hard work but others are too. Today in the library I was notified that Rubina was not there due to her being sick. At first when I heard the news I felt unprepared since I didn’t have a program. But thankfully the other librarians told me that they will be a Henna program for the kids and pizza too. I served pizza and served drinks while they were doing their hennas. The librarians really appreciated my help since they were short in staff. While the kids were doing their henna one of the kids wanted me to do it with them, andI did. While the women was doing my Henna she asked me if I volunteer here and I said yes. She told me “ we need more teenagers like you not many kids your age don’t do this. I can see the kids enjoy you here.” Hearing that from someone who don’t see what I do everyday and can still give me a compliment means so much to me. I truly love going to the library and I’m so proud to say that I’m not only seeing my growth others are too. When I got home from school I started a Valentine program that I plan to do with the kids. I plan to read a book called “ Happy Valentines day mouse “ to the kids then make mouses out of chocolate kisses. I plan to do this program on Wednesday. Hopefully we will have school so I can go to the library because unfortunately I won't be able to do it on Thursday because I have a internship meeting.
February 14, 2019
Today after school I went to the library. I made a program that I was really excited in doing with the kids. I planned on reading “Happy Valentines Day, Mouse” and make mice out of chocolate kisses. The kids were very excited doing this program because it was book related and what elementary student doesn’t like candy. Many kids were creative with this program and they made some adorable mice it was the cutest thing ever. At the end of the program one first grader showed her chocolate kiss mouse to her mom and her mom was so impressed with her creativity. The mom asked “ You made that with them? That is so nice and creative” and the first grader response was “ When she comes to the library we always do fun things”. Hearing a parent that is impressed in what I do makes me truthfully good inside and seeing one of my kids excited to show her mom what she did with me honestly makes me feel that I’m doing something right.
February 15, 2019
Today after school I went to the library and I did my Bingo program. Most kids were very excited about this program because its something that they aren’t use to. I really enjoyed playing and making this bingo program because is not only fun for this kids but it also helps them with their sight words. Me and kids played at least five rounds because most kids wanted to have a chance to win. After the Bingo game I took out board games for the kids to play with since it was a Friday. There was one boy who came up to me and told me that he wanted to play connect four with me.When I took the game out he said he likes to play with me and he misses me since I don't come everyday anymore. Hearing that from him honestly put a big smile on my face. I was having a bad day in school and I knew coming to the library will bring some joy into me and it honestly did. I should soon be leaving the library and it honestly makes me sad because these kids honestly bring the best out of me and always seem to manage to put a smile on my face.
February 20, 2019
Today after school I went to the library, I was so excited to see Rubina because I feel like I haven’t seen in her forever due to the snow days and Presidents day. Rubina was excited to me as well and we catched up on a couple of things. Many students came to the library and I was able to help with homework and read to a couple of kids as well. After homework, me and Rubina did a S.T.EM project were kids learned about germs. We will able to put a type of lotion and see germs under a LED light. It was pretty cool.. After the program I asked Rubina about my field work log that she signed and she gave them to me. I also informed Rubina that some time next month Ill be no longer volunteering at the library. Rubina was sad to hear about the news but she knew eventually the day was going to come. She told me that I will be deeply miss and she knows I will stop by and say hi. She said she will always remember me and she so lucky to watch me grow into a young woman that I am today. She was able to get to know me during my junior and senior year and she saw my growth for the past year. Hearing that for me honestly made me feel so good and kind of emotional in the way because both of my mentors Rubina and Christina have really supported me my two years of high school and has witness my growth.
February 25, 2019
I can say for the past week it hasn’t been my week. I have been down and having no motivation to do anything. I didn't attend to the library on Friday because I wasn’t in the mood I was just mopy. I knew going to the library will make me feel better because seeing my kids always change my mood when I’m having a bad day. But I seemed to not have no desire to go to the library and for the rest of the day I felt so guilty. This afternoon I went to the library and I was actually excited to see my kids and they were too. I helped a few kids with homework and they read to me as well which I love! There is one girl who is in eighth grade who always goes to the library when I’m there. She’s a English learner and we talked a few times and she enjoys talking to me and we both love to draw.Today I noticed she was reading one of my favorite books “ The Hate That U Give”. I was so excited to see her read it because I love that book. She told me she wish she can understand the book a little more because she doesn’t understand some words. She was also frustrated because every day she has to answer questions and she doesn't understand it. I was happy to review the book to her and translate it to her. She thanked me and told me she wish she was smart like me. I told her she’s very smart and she shouldn't think that she's not. Just because she doesn't understand certain things doesn't make her not smart. That's why I’m here to help her learn and gain more knowledge.
February 28, 2019
Today at the library was not a typical ordinary day. Rubina informed me that caribbean drummers were coming to the library to perform for the kids. I was very excited to hear about this and was happy that we were going to do something new. The kids danced, played with different instruments and the drums, and I was part of it. The drum instructor wanted me and my mentors to teach the chicken dance to the students and it was the most funniest thing ever. It was definitely a A Ha moment seeing myself and my mentors dancing in front of elementary students. But the kids enjoyed it and that's what matters the most. I was thrilled and happy to see their smiles on their face and seeing how much fun they had. After the program I discussed to Rubina my idea for tomorrow. Since tomorrow is Dr. Seuss birthday I wanted to read a book to the kids and make a craft based on this book. At first we couldn't find the specific book that I wanted but we found a better one. I’m extremely excited to do this program I know the kids are going to love it!
March 1, 2019
Today I was very excited to go to the library because of the program that I’ve planned for the kids. I would be reading “ Yertle the Turtle” by Dr. Seuss and making cute turtles made out of egg cartons. When I went to the library Rubina told me she was going to do her program and I will be able to do mine right after hers. Her program was to read Dr. Seuss books to the kids and I did the same as well. Students were able to read to us as too and sing while they rhyme. After Rubina’s program I was able to do mine. At first there wasn’t a lot of students to be found but I eventually found eight students and they participated in my program. The kids enjoyed this program so much and were very creative. After making their turtles they did a challenge to see how many turtles can stack up on each other. Staking the turtles was pretty fun because they had different strategies on how to stack them. While cleaning after the program they were still turtles left behind due to the students in a hurry to leave. There was one third grader who asked me if he can take them home because he loves turtles. He was telling me how he misses going to the beach in Puerto Rico and seeing baby sea turtles in the shore. He thanked me for coming up with this program. After hearing his story was so heart warming and so adorable.

Today in first block Mrs. Boutillier came into my class to discuss the E portfolio rubric. Looking at the rubric and hearing what she expects I’m already all set. Mrs. Boutiller kept shouting me out in class and for her to do that and put me as a example really means a lot to me. Tomorrow I will have Mrs. Zamorski review my website and see if I need to make any changes. When I went to the library today I was so excited to see my kids. After talking about them and my project to the Fox scholars at my Fox scholarship interview it made me miss them over the weekend. Today me and Rubina decided to do slime and doing that program was very interesting. It was a challenge at first because we had to settle the kids down and some of the kids weren't following instructions. However, me and Rubina were able to manage their behavior which turn out great. The aftermath after the program however, was very messy due to the slime being clumpy and sticky. After cleaning up and making the kids were cleaned up Rubina informed me that Christina will be coming back. And I also informed her that I should be starting my internship soon therefore, my schedule is going to change and I will be leaving the library soon. I told her that I really don't want to go and I wish I can stay longer. Rubina told me “ Jenika don't make this harder than what it is I don't want to let you go either and the kids don't too. But your going on a growth spurt and as a friend and mentor I know I have to let my good partner go.” I gave Rubina a hug after that. We both agreed that my last day will be on April 1st and I will be throwing a small party for the kids.
March 20, 2019
When I was walking to the library today I told myself “ This is really my last half day I walk to the library”. Saying that to myself made me sad and kind of excited because senior year is really coming to a end. Everyday when I visit the library try to enjoy it every time because I know I’m going to miss my mentors and my kids so much. Today at the library I did what I usually do like preparing snack and homework. Today I was introduced to a girl she was Portuguese Rubina told me that she didn’t know how to speak any English and she told me that I can try to help her with homework. After Rubina said that the girl came up to me and said “ ola voce fala portugues” and I told her “ I’m sorry I don’t speak portuguese”. She looked disappointed but she still took out her homework. I was kinda nervous to help her because I didn’t know how to speak the same language as her. But I still managed to help her she counted English with me to finish her math homework and she did absolutely great I was very impressed. After I helped her with homework she gave me a big smile and said “ obrigado thank you”. I said it back and she gave me a thumbs up it was one of the cutest moments ever. When I left the library I said bye to everyone and on my way out one of my kids came out with me and yelled “ Jenika Jenika Jenika give me a hug “ he gave me the tightest hug ever. I told him that I will be leaving soon and he got sad but I told him that I was going throw a party for everyone and he got very excited.
March 25, 2019
Today in capstone class Mrs. Zamorski graded my E profile rough draft and I got a ninety seven! I was so happy and proud of myself when I received that notification. Senior year is really coming to the end and I’m so ready! Today at the library I did finger puppets with my students. They were very creative with this craft and was able to have their own puppet show, it was one of the cutest things ever. After the puppet show I helped a middle schooler who is a English learner and tends to have difficulties when it comes to doing her homework. I was able to assist her and while I was helping her I learned that she is a very bright student. When I was done helping with her homework I asked her if she gets additional help from any teachers in school. And she told me no that's why she is always struggling with homework because she doesn't get the additional assistance in school. I told her that's why she has me, I’m her additional help. She had a big smile on her face and hugged me and thanked me. It was a touchy moment for me because my whole capstone project focuses on students like her and hearing that English Learners like her don’t get the proper assistance breaks my heart. I hope in the future students like me will be concerned about this situation and actually help these individuals.
March 27, 2019
Today when I went to the library my mentors and other librarians questioned me about the code red yesterday. They told me they saw the news and they were very concerned because they know I attend to SMSA. They were all glad I was okay and seeing that they were worried about this really meant alot because it showed that they really care. At the library I helped with students with their homework like usual and we made 3D ladybugs. The kids were very creative with their lady bugs and they turned out to adorable. During the program one boy decided to make a sunflower instead of a lady bug and I was okay with it because the program was spring themed. When I saw him making the sun flower I saw how focused he was I have known J for a year now and he is always hyperactive and a lot of librarians don’t know how to control him. But for some reason I always seem to manage his behavior and calm him down its like I understand him. Over time I have learned when J draws or make crafts he is very focused and calm. Seeing this has really gave me a insight what it's like to work with kids like him since I want to be a clinical child psychologist. J is one of my favorites although he has his day I always have a special place for him in my heart. He was very sad when I told him I was leaving soon and every single time he remembers he tells me “don't go”. While he was doing his homework he made me a card that said “ Remember me J the naughty boy I love you Jenika. I’m going to miss you Jenika.” After reading that it brought me a big smile on my face and I gave him a tight hug and told him that was so nice of him. I’m truly going to miss my kids I hope having this attachment with them won’t affect me when I leave.
March 28, 2019
Today in class I realized that it was Thursday and I got sad because tomorrow is basically my last day at the library. The days are going by so fast and it's getting me so sad. When I went to the library my kids were very excited to see me. One student that I have knew for a year now hasn't been coming to the library everyday like he usually does due to him going to a after school program now. He was very excited to me and I was too, I informed him that Monday was my last day and she come to the library that day. He got sad when I said that and told me “ No don't go Jenika your one of my favorites”. After he said that gave me a realization that these kids really enjoy my presence in the library. After that discussion I helped with students with their homework and dida book program where the kids made their own picture books. One girl made a book about me and titled it “ Jenika last day in the library”. While she was making the book she was telling me how much she's going to miss me and she made me promise to still visit the library Before I left the library I talked to Christina, I enjoy talking to her so much when it comes to school because she always gives me advice and always makes me feel better. I informed her about me not winning the Fox scholarship and she told me to not let tat bring me down and take it as motivation to do even better in future scholarships. She also told me she’s willing to help me when it comes to answering questions during a interview. Christina also gave me a good pep talk when it came to how I put myself out. She notices how hard working I am and how I am always determined but she feels like I don’t tend to put time for myself because I’m always focused on to do better and school work. She told me at times I need to breathe and enjoy myself and what I’m doing. Hearing her say that has really made me think and it's true. Having conversations like these with Christina is something that I’m truly going to miss. It feels so great that I have close relationships with my mentors.
March 29, 2019
It’s my last Friday at the library and now I came to a realization that my days are coming to a end. Today I didn’t coordinate any programs for the kids because I decided it should be a Fun Friday. When my kids saw me they were very excited to see me. I helped a few kids with their homework and after I played UNO with them. It was really fun playing with and seeing their competitive side. While playing me ad the kids had discussions and cracked a few jokes. Stuff like this is something that I really enjoy because it allows me to bond with each one of them. There was one girl who told me “ I wish you can stay longer Jenika. Why do you have to go”. I told her I wish I can stay longer too and If i can I would and after saying that I gave her a hug. I reminded all my kids that I was doing a goodbye party on Monday and just reminding them made them sad. I promised each one of them that I will visit them,
April 1. 2019
This is it my last journal, time went by so fast and looking back at my journey makes me so proud of myself. Today will be the last day I will be volunteering at Dwight Branch Library a place that I have been familiar with for over a year now. I have gotten so close to the librarians and the kids as well. I’m honestly sad that I’m leaving, I'm going to miss my kids so much and I still can’t believe how fast this day came. I can't let this day be sad though I have to take it as consideration that I achieve something and I have experienced a amazing opportunity to give back to a place that has truly shaped my life. Today felt so unreal to say “ Today is my last day at the library” to my teachers and friends. Even walking into the library made me sad because I won’t have the same routine everyday anymore. When I walked in the library everyone greeted me like they normally do but with a sad face. Everyone seem to be saddened that it was my last day and I don't blame them because I was pretty sad myself. I saw my kids and they were very anxious to see me. There was one kid that walked in the library and said “ Jenika please don’t go just stay a little longer”. Hearing him say that bought a big smile on my face and also got me a little sad. It gave me a realization that these kids truly enjoy and appreciate my stay at the library and it means so much to me. After helping with homework I decided to pass out my cupcakes that I bought for the kids and they surprised me with goodbye cards. The all individually made me a personalized card and it was the cutest thing ever. After passing that out I gave my two mentors Rubina and Christina a gift. One of them cried and gave me a tight hug, it was definitely a emotional moment. I had to give them something to show my appreciation because both of my mentors have helped me and supported me throughout my journey I’m so thankful and honored to be working with them because they definitely inspire me. Before leaving library I stopped and looked at the library smiled and cried a little. I did it and I achieved my task successfully and gratefully! It has been a amazing experience and I wouldn't change anything about it.
.
